First set of themes
Generosity-
Lying
Assimilation
Thesis: Vargas shows that lying could cause some harm for anybody, but he show his generosity to show the undocumted people how he managed to live in America for a long time and what does it feel to live in this country. [show assimilation more clearly in thesis. Is it in the last phrase “what does it feel to live in this country”?]
Second set of themes
Confinement
Curiosity
Ambition
Thesis: Vargas, being confined both physically and mentally, resulted in his aspiration to become a journalist. The circumstances of being undocumented along with the restrictions followed by immigration had only encouraged him to further pursue his career, for his curiosity and passion for journalism enlightened him. Vargas was determined to prove that he was a worthy citizen, prior to his previous self denial “I had internalized this anxiety from years of hearing they’re taking-our-jobs narrative about ‘illegals.’”(Vargas 84). [explain briefly how the last sentence connects to the themes]
Third set
Sacrifice
Citizenship
Separation
Thesis: Vargas’ life in the USA is filled with many sacrifices and [he, Vargas] has not only been separated from his mother, but also from himself. He does all of this with no hope of a pathway to citizenship, even though he has lived most of his life here.
