Pre-Writing for the Reflective Essay

Introduction to Reflective Essay	• What context or background can you provide about yourself as a reader, writer, student?   • What do you need to set up in the beginning to help your reader fully comprehend what’s to come in your essay? • What were your high school English classes like?   • Were you overwhelmed this quarter?  How so?   • You can also go back to Hook Ideas for Introductions.
THESIS:	• What is your stance on your overall preparedness for EWRT 1AT?
BODY PARAGRAPH #1:   What has changed or improved in terms of your writing?     What’s been the most helpful in this class in terms of writing?     Focus on 2 or 3 writing strategies in this paragraph to keep it focused as a PIE, not a list.(1-2 paragraphs)	Point=What will you prove about yourself as a writer after this quarter?           Info=What support will you use to back this up?  (class materials, lines from your essay, e.g a strong thesis or use of a joining word, my comments)                     Explanation=Explain how and why your support is important, how it helps prove your point.

Body Paragraph #4:  What topic have you learned more about besides reading and writing?    Have you learned more in terms of facts and details?   Have you learned more about any issues or controversies?   (1 paragraph)	Point=What have you learned outside of reading and writing?  What topic was educative for you?         Information=What will you use from our texts that can back up what you are saying here?             Explanation=Explain or analyze how that is significant
Body Paragraph #5:  Discuss some of what this unprecedented time has been like for you.  (1 paragraph)	Point =What will you prove about yourself as someone who has experienced a Pandemic and sheltering in place?             Info=What support will you use to back this up?  (your experiences or observations in the last few months)                 Explanation=Explain how and why your support is important, how it helps prove your point
Body Paragraph #6 (optional):  Please discuss some of what we are seeing in the Black Lives Matter Movement.   How has that affected you, and has it shaped how you view your education?   (1 paragraph, optional)	Point =Present what you are seeing, experiencing, especially in terms of protests, activism, or future plans to help the movement.       Info =What support will you use to back this up?  (your experiences or observations in the last few months, any videos, articles, signs, images, and so on that have been particularly impactful for you)             Explanation=Explain how and why your support is important, how it helps prove your point.
Conclusion	What needs improvement? What will you work on in EWRT 1AT?  What goals might you set for yourself?  What would you like to congratulate yourself on?
